To the uninitiated, navigating iTunes to download music to your iPod Touch can be confusing and frustrating. Many users are worried they will accidentally delete their entire playlist or aren’t sure how to import files. Relax. With a little guidance, this process can be quick and easy. Don’t be intimidated. Following these simple tips will help you download all of your favorite music onto you iPod.
First, plug the iPod cord into any available USB port. The iTunes application should automatically pop up. If it doesn’t, you will be prompted to download it from Apple.com. The iTunes software is free. If your iPod is brand new, you will be walked through the steps to register it. Once you’ve completed the setup, you can now begin to download music onto you iPod.
Before you begin, you will need to decide whether or not you want your iPod to automatically sync with the music files on your computer. Think carefully about this decision. If you decide to set it to automatically sync, which is the default, you will need to be very careful with your files. If a favorite song or album is deleted from the computer, it will automatically be pulled from the iPod upon syncing. Also, if you decide to auto-sync, be sure that you have sufficient hard drive space to keep the entire contents of your iPod.
For beginners, setting the iPod to change only upon your instruction is best. Set the iPod to manual manipulation by selecting edit, then preferences. A smaller window will appear. In the smaller window, select devices and click the checkbox next to ‘prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically’. Click okay at the bottom of the window and it will close. This will prevent you from making any hasty mistakes, losing data, or clogging your hard drive with music.
There are three ways to download music on to you iPod at this point. You can rip from CDs, purchase from the iTunes store, or move files from a folder on your computer’s hard drive. CDs are the easiest to add. Simply insert the CD into the tray and iTunes will ask you if you want to import the songs. This takes a few minutes, and iTunes will alert you when it is done. The iTunes store is equally simple, you are guided through the process with on-screen prompts.
Adding files from a saved folder used to be a long process of dragging and dropping individual files into the iPod. While you can use this method to add a few songs, you can also add entire folders of music at once by selecting file in the upper left-hand corner and then selecting ‘add folder to Library’. This will import everything in the folder.
By following these tips, you can download thousands of songs to your iPod easily and without fear of making mistakes.
